What is the Affordable Warmth Scheme?
The Affordable Warmth Scheme is a Government initiative designed to help low income householders reduce their heating bills. This is achieved by replacing broken gas boilers or broken electric panel heaters.
Storage Heater Grants are offered by the Affordable Warmth Scheme as part of the Government’s fight against fuel poverty. It also aims to reduce carbon emissions and help limit the effects of climate change.
ECO Grants are also available to install Cavity Wall Insulation and Loft Insulation in homes which do not have any.
How do I apply for a storage heater grant?
It’s simple.

Once we have established that you qualify for a storage heater grant we will arrange a FREE SURVEY of your home’s heating system. This will form part of your Affordable Warmth Scheme storage heater grant application.
If your storage heater grant is approved, an ECO Accredited Installer will arrange to remove your old electric panel heaters and install new storage heaters in your home. Storage Heater Grants are based on a deemed score which will be allocated to your home based on the property type, number of bedrooms and several other factors.
Will it cost me anything?
Hopefully your storage heater grant will cover the full cost of replacing all of your storage heaters but if not, you may be asked to make a contribution. If you are not happy to make a contribution, you can withdraw your application and it won’t cost you anything. For more information please see the answer to the question below.
We may need your date of birth to speed up your application to confirm that you satisfy the State Benefit qualifying criteria for storage heater grants. If you are not happy to provide your date of birth we may need copies of your state benefit award letters to support your application.
Do storage heater grants cover the full cost of new storage heaters?
Not necessarily.
Storage heater grants are based on an assumption of how much you would save by installing more energy efficient electric storage heaters. The more you would save, the higher your storage heater grant will be.
To arrive at the value of storage heater grants, account is taken of the type and size of your property, how many bedrooms it has, how many external walls there are and how well it is insulated. This is based on a system of Deemed Scores which applies a grant value to each property without the need for an EPC.
If your storage heater grant is insufficient to cover the full cost of installing new storage heaters in your home, you may be asked to make a contribution. If you do not want to contribute towards the cost, you can withdraw your application and it will not cost you a penny.
Remember though, new energy efficient storage heaters will need less electricity to keep your house warm so you will save money on your future heating bills.
How long will storage heater grants be available?
Storage Heater Grants are available from the Affordable Warmth Scheme which is part of the Government’s ECO Scheme (Energy Companies Obligation). The original ECO Scheme was scheduled to end on 31st March 2015 but was extended as ECO2 to 31st March 2017.
ECO2t Transitional Scheme
On 1st April 2017 a new 18 month transitional ECO Scheme started which provided more funding to help deal with fuel poverty in low income households.
New ECO3 Scheme
ECO3 Scheme is scheduled to run until March 2022.
